Message of the day - July 22, 2011:

Hi everyone,

The meat of today's post is just one car. This is as much an offer by me as a request of someone on the modelintermodal Yahoo group, but hey, it should help at least one modeler out there!

The car featured is a 3 unit All Purpose Husky Stack built by Gunderson for BN in 1994 and relettered and renumbered for BNSF sometime prior to 2004, and from my observations most of these cars became BNSF during 1997-1999 or so.

I will confess that while I have quite a few photos of these 3 unit drawbar connected cars, I have intentionally turned my nose up at them. As a modeler, I strongly prefer articulated cars and when it is my money that's what I buy. You can get more units in less space. The railroads have figured this out as well, and this type of car is not very common in modern operations. They are now a special purpose car preferred only for very heavy loads where more axles under each unit offers increased load capacity.

Note all three units in the car featured today, AP Husky Stack #231002, are loaded with two 20' containers on the bottom and a 40' on top. This is a common loading pattern for taking advantage of the increased load capacity of these cars.

Last but not least is one recent locomotive photo. I did make quota of 5 photos on July 1 this month, but 2 of the 5 were redundant photos of 3GS21B's so I opted not to post that day. I am glad I got out then though, apparently it was the only day this month the temperature did not break 100 degrees! Expect the next couple posts to feature on pic from this month as is the case with SD70ACE #9281 and one three unit car as I offer up a few more examples. The models are out there on the market, so may as well make the best of them!

Enjoy!
