Message of the day - March 5, 2000:

Hi everyone,

Kansas City is a key stop for many coal trains, as power is often added and removed there. Mark R. Lynn spends plenty of film on these coal trains, which are usually powered by SD70MAC's and tend to stop at Murray Yard in North Kansas City awaiting addition or removal of power.

Many distributed power trains run with one or two units on the lead, and one on the rear, but due to steep grades in southern Missouri, one or two extra units is added to loaded trains and removed from empties when in Kansas City. The empties are usually not run with distributed power, so four (and sometimes 5) MAC's are often on the point of empties on their way back to KC, as is the case in Mark's shot of BNSF 8835.

Enjoy!
