May 2012 was a busy month. I did get trackside a few times, but most of what I was busy with was scanning film for a slide show at the 7th Annual "24 Hours @ Saginaw" event hosted by the NRHS North Texas Chapter and the Saginaw Chamber of Commerce.

While you'd think that I'd take way more pictures in 24 hours than on a typical day, on a typical day there aren't 100+ others around to enjoy the company of, so I only got 3 decent roster pix, and only one in what I call traditional lighting. The other two are my attempts at making use of the full 24 hours.

The first two photos featured today were from the weekend before to get the total up to the customary 5 pix. The third is the first pic from the 24 hour event of C44-9W #4011. This is actually a composite of two photos, one with the subject locomotive taken with flash at 1/250 since it was moving and the other of the scene after the train passed. The metadata for those who study such things is from the second photo only. It falls well short of my hopes and I made some mistakes, but I did learn from them. Earlier similar attempts from hours before were worse.

The fourth is the second pic from the 24 hour event of 3GS21B #1291. By this time sunrise had not occurred yet, but dawn was approaching and ambient light was adequate to where the background is lit with available light and the subject locomotive is lit with flash, again a moving train at 1/250. I do not consider this greatness, but at least more success than failure, with my only real mistake being the flash adequate on the front, but too dim on the rear.

With more practice, I'll get better, but I'm still not sure that this is something I want to do frequently. Traditional direct sunlight roster shooting suits my tastes better. But it's nice to learn some new skills to broaden my capabilities. I will say that I am gaining an appreciation for shooting with a controlled light source. I just need to figure out how to control it better.
