Message of the day - November 8, 1998:

Hi everyone,

Here are a couple more bland black BNSF gondolas, and three "Coil Cars." These are cars specially designed to carry steel coils, as the shot of laaded coil car #529805 shows. I am not quite sure why these special cars were made (other than obviously being better suited for the one kind of cargo it is designed for), as I have seen steel coils loaded in gondolas, which are much more versatile. I guess these coils are pretty heavy, and the average gondola does not have the same capacity, plus, the load would probably be more prone to shifting in a gondola. Without a load, if it were not for the name "Coil Car" painted on the side of the car, these would certainly appear to be strange pieces of rolling stock to anyone who has not seen one loaded before. They certainly stand out when mixed in with other cars in a mixed freight.

Enjoy!
