Hi everyone,
Today we have five more boxcars. Fortunatley, no two are the same, and not just because the road number is different. The three single plug door cars are very similar, but not the same. 713082 looks very similar to 714340, but there are slight variations in the body of the car. Most noticable to me is the sills on the bottom of the car. While 714302 appears to be almost identical to 714340, there is very noticable difference in the paint. Amazingly this did not occur to me at the time I took the shot (April Fool's Day) but the BNSF logo is in a non-standard position. The differences in the other two cars should be quite obvious. Both are painted a different shade of boxcar red / tuscan, and one is a "waffle side" while the other is a double sliding door. I can't help but point out that there is one thing that is the same for almost all boxcars. None have roofwalks. I challenge you to find a BNSF, or for that matter any boxcar that has roofwalks in the 80's or 90's. There are very few specialized exceptions. One of my modelling peeves is seeing modellers run boxcars with roofwalks in what otherwise looks like a very nice modern (80's or 90's) train. It especially kills me to see members of clubs at train shows running BNSF locomotives followed by boxcars with roofwalks. I know from talking to many of these people that they really intend to model a modern train, and they are somewhat appreciative of learning this information on the prototypes they are modelling. Of course, then they have to deal with the frustration of what to do with all those boxcars that they thought looked so neat but would really be more at home behind a Great Northern locomotive. I try my best to catch these people early so they don't blow too much money on nice looking boxcars from the 40's, 50's and 60's. Enjoy! |
