Message of the day - September 10, 2003:

Hi everyone,

Today I again break from the parade of solid textbook rosters of Heritage II C44-9W's with a couple overheads and a couple examples of how not to take rosters. Every once in a while, I find myself breaking down and posting some flawed rosters, if for no other reason to have a way to point out things to avoid when taking rosters. For those interesed in learning the science (it is not an art) of quality roster shooting, you should never take photos with the nose backlit like this shot of C44-9W #4870. Fortunately, the location is Dayton's Bluff, so I can pawn it off as a scenic close up action shot. Also, do not waste your valuable slide film on such flawed subjects as C44-9W #4408 with a nasty pole shadow. While in Houston last Sunday, I had to pass up two roster shots due to pole shadows. My patience paid off on one of the two subjects, as a crew came out and moved it after about half an hour. Had I waited another hour, the sun would have shifted enough to move the shadow off one of the two locomotives. I was ready to wait that long for the sun to move, and yes, the subject was a Heritage II C44-9W. As a reward for my patience, the crew also did me the unexpected favor of uncoupling an SD40-2 still in full BN paint! At one time, those BN SD40-2's were just as mundane as these C44-9W's are today, but as I shot that SD40-2, I could not help but wonder if it would be the last roster I will ever take of a true BN SD40-2.

Enjoy!
